Joker: Folie à Deux 2024 Review

Image
Joker is something I came across five years ago at the Venice Film Festival, and I was furious and felt like I had been wronged because of it. To get back at it, I tried to pen down ‘what I considered a review;’ readers appeared to believe it was half baked. The title “Review,” captured the essence of “expressed my fury with words.” Turns out, I was lucky enough to find out that no, I could have cooled off. I had a notice I shredded with too much freedom, and was capped in five hours during which I could not access. In this period, I had to rationally decide no matter how hard it was to spoil a plot for uncapped first anger, there was nowhere to reveal plot details. For me, the most intense moments are when I am a live TV caller in as a forward and Murray Frankie’s Bowman Father may only portray the half rhythmic Joe Phillips’s Joker-in-Fleck. While in the peak hot pause late show hosting toward mockinghim of loosest constrain the lord not because formal setup a deck has shove Art...

Killers of the Flower Moon 2023 Review

Image
"Can you find the wolves in this part of the picture?" Ernest Burkhardt (Leonardo DiCaprio) reads out a page of a children’s book early in Scorsese's “Killers of the Flower Moon.” The wolves are not concealed and neither will they be in the movie ‘kills of the Flower Moon’ which is an epic historical narrative of inhumanity operating in plain within a plain view. One of the most disturbing aspects of Scorsese’s ambitious adaptation “Killers of the Flower Moon”, which is David Grann's non-fiction is how little of its vile acts are concealed. Scorsese's timelines oscillate as he narrates profoundly intricate tales alongside framing broader commentaries on evil dominion and bias encompassing humanity.   In the disguise of violence, exploitation, and evil, Scorsese vividly strings together the chronicles of individuals who regarded killing people as a mundane and effortless task that they can do on an arbitrary basis such as drinking a glass of whiskey. In the second...

The Day After Tomorrow 2004 Review

Image
Sure gives me peace for a moment, knowing that the music in a movie made by Roland Emmerich gives peoples life, new hope. Emmerich movies seem to have a theme, billions of people seem to have died, but thank god, the major characters survived. It is always so dramatic when Los Angeles gets attacked by flying saucers, in Emmerich’s “Independence Day”, New York getting brutally assaulted in his “Godzilla.” In ”The Day After Tomorrow”  With alot of Northern Hemisphere for added bonus, Emmerich does the unthinkable with Los Angeles, which gets demolished by multiple tornados, and New York, which gets entombed in ice and snow, the United Kingdom gets flash-frozen. Sam, Laura and their pals along with Jack are so lucky to have survived the apocalypes that Emmerich sets in place. Thank god too, Dr. Hall’s little cancer patient which makes this film soft. Yes, the movie is absurdly silly, but what is surprising is the amount of genuine scares it provides. The special effects are so i...

Heretic 2024 Review

Image
What could be more frightening than thinking that some omnipotent being governs every single aspect of our daily reality? Not having any form of faith or belief to rely on at all. This paradox of human existence is looked at in Scott Beck and Bryan Woods’s Heretic, an unsettlingly fascinating thriller that investigates the unsettling nature of belief. We might have seen hundreds of horror movies depicting the mindless violence carried out by religious zealots, but this film goes the other way by exploring the more psychological angles of horror. It’s a careful analysis not just of the stories told, but the stories themselves. The movie spans history, telling the story of various religions and their role in shaping civilization. The pacing continues to build tension throughout the film which works for the sub-genre and stimulates several parts of the brain at once. During the moments of genre filmmaking which raise your heart rate and blood pressure, this film does so within a safe...

Apartment 7A 2024 Review

Image
Few have dared to omit Polanski's Rosemary's Baby while describing the most notable horor films, as its genre-crossing nature sits untouched.. Fantastic Fest, or as I like to refer to it as America’s most elite level horror festival, features blood-curdling films and hair-raising horror spectacles. It is home to America’s Rosemary’s Baby, the nation’s flagship masterpiece and timeless classic - not to mention its iconic TV sequels, remakes, and tear-inducing replicas (like Zoe Saldana’s) that are also deserving of recognition. The film also seems to serve as the genesis of a cycle inspiring tribute films like The First Omen and Apartment 7A that shadow the initial hit. Natalie James's Apartment 7a stands as the ultimate scholar’s epitaph to the Omen franchise. Even though Mark’s attempt centers around a stellar catalog where excess is abundant, Apartment 7a makes spirals around the plot eluding ‘The Omen's spirit.’ While the former proved to me self-identifying ferocit...

The Accountant 2 2025 Review

Image
What functions in The Accountant 2 mirrors the buddy action films of the 1980s, where two actors with starkly contrasting traits were featured together and the audience was expected to enjoy the spectacle that ensued. Here, Affleck almost plays a version of the “brains” while Bernthal acts as the “brawn.” It is mesmerizing to see the two likeable actors embodying the distinct sibling-sibling volatile affection and friction together. When they are allowed to play off each other, as in the spectacular rooftop scene at Affleck’s Sunstream, the film goes into overdrive. Sadly, the rest is a problem. Coming out to reunite with the notions that are very tangled is “The Accountant 2”. This time set many years after the first movie of 'The Accountant' (which was released 9 years back), the movie stars Raymond King (J.K. Simmons), who now works as a private investigator after he resigned from FinCEN, and is currently tracking a missing family of three. He supposedly is getting warmer t...

Last Breath 2025 Review

Image
The creators of the “Last Breath” rescue drama, which is based on real-life events, have constructed exactly the type of movie you would expect from a modern exploration-themed men’s melodrama. In this particular scenario, there is some situational drama involving a saturation diver who faints next to an oil pipeline at the bottom of the Northern Sea. There are also absurdly dramatic exchanges between characters who, if they were not (for the most part) acted astonishingly from what is frequently perceived as capably cliché-salted-bacon dialogue, would never be “humanized.” Some scenes are so absurd that I can easily understand why many people portray them as mere “workplace” unimaginative theatrics. Finn Cole, Woody Harrelson, and Simu Liu do manage to pull that pony off, so credit where it’s painfully overdue. The same can’t be said about the multitude of lead protagonists who plummet emotionally only to retrieve stale film lines that can only be described as pathetic. ...
